The Proposed Tax Reforms Are a Recipe for Disaster…- CNG Spokesperson

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Sokoto State Chapter, has vehemently opposed the proposed Tax Reform Bills, citing concerns that they will disproportionately harm Northern Nigeria and exacerbate existing socio-economic challenges.

At a press conference held in Sokoto, the CNG argued that the new VAT sharing formula will primarily benefit Lagos and Rivers states, leaving Sokoto state and other northern states with limited resources to meet basic obligations such as paying workers’ salaries or funding critical services.

“The proposed tax reforms are a recipe for disaster, particularly for Northern Nigeria,” said a spokesperson for the CNG. “We urge the federal government to suspend the implementation of these reforms and engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of resources.”

The CNG also highlighted the region’s existing security challenges, power crisis, and defunding of critical institutions as key concerns that must be addressed. They emphasized that the tax reforms will only serve to worsen these issues, further entrenching poverty and inequality in the region.

The CNG’s opposition to the tax reform bills has sparked a heated debate about the federal government’s economic policies and their impact on Northern Nigeria. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the people of Northern Nigeria will not stand idly by while their region is disproportionately harmed.
